Furthermore, the bulky front sport seats further compromise legroom. The CLA is often considered more suitable for four passengers, as the rear center seat is narrow. The CLA 200 we're testing is powered by a 1.3-liter, 161-horsepower, four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This setup features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, although the transition between gasoline and electric power at low speeds can be abrupt. The brakes, in particular, feel inconsistent due to the combination of physical braking, electric assistance, and energy recovery, which can make stopping smoothly difficult. On country roads, the CLA offers a more satisfying driving experience, with quick steering, albeit with limited feedback. The chassis balance and good grip make it a fun car to drive in corners. The engine delivers adequate, though not exceptional, performance and can generate a noticeable noise when stressed. On highways, the 19-inch wheels on our car provide a firm, but not uncomfortable, ride.
